Rotten Tomatoes -- Ranking Bad Fruit

In the last blog on the fruit of the Spirit, we covered tomatoes 1 and 2 – Love and Joy.  Today’s blog we look at 3 tomatoes – peace, longsuffering, and gentleness. There isn’t a rotten tomato in the bunch. Have you seen the ROTTEN TOMATO ranking? They rank how terrible a movie or tv show is by the number of rotten tomatoes assigned. While this list has some difficult fruit none are rotten, and if you attempt to grow them yourself the result will not last. With the Spirit, we know all things are possible.

I read somewhere two of the most popular names for girls when the church was beginning in Acts were the Greek names Chara (Cara) and Eirene (Irene). The English form of those names are Joy and Peace respectively.  I love that, don’t you? New Christians being persecuted chose to name their baby girls Joy and Peace. How can you have joy and peace when you are being persecuted for your belief? For one, be Spirit-filled like the new believers. Some had experienced Pentecost. Some had heard from those who witness Pentecost first hand. When people spoke about their faith, there was passion.

So are you ready to slice up some peace, longsuffering and gentleness tomatoes?

TOMATO 3 -- Peace

The older I get or should I say the more mature I become the more I crave peace…actually peace and quiet. It’s a rarity in a house with a senior in high school and an ADHD teenage son who will be blessed to make 14 at the end of August. Plus, add 2 dogs and a husband, and the only way there is peace and quiet is if they have left the house or they are all asleep. Can anyone relate?

And while I may not get peace AND quiet, I can still have peace and be at peace even when the kids are arguing, dogs are barking and my husband can’t find his wallet or phone. So what is peace? The Greek is Eirene, sounds like serene to me. Peace is tranquility with security. Tranquility WITH security in Christ.

Where joy is the loudest fruit of the Spirit, peace is actually described more as a way or a path. It’s a way of life. Luke 1:79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Romans 3:17 And the way of peace they have not known. Galatians 6:16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon Israel of God.

A pathway of peace means it’s a lifestyle practiced every day. My favorite verse regarding peace is 1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. God does not intend for our life to be ruled by confusion but by the peace that the Spirit gives. How peaceful is your walk?

Tomato 4 -- Longsuffering

The next tomato really doesn’t have a lot of content. It’s longsuffering. Some people think longsuffering is patience, and they would be partially correct. Longsuffering is patience in the face of conflict or an adversary. Let that sink in for a moment…Patience in the face of conflict or an adversary.

The word patience has a different Greek word than longsuffering. 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be in season in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. When should you be longsuffering? In season and out of season…are there any other seasons? And when is longsuffering to be displayed – when reproving, rebuking and exhorting. Does this sound like a verse you might know? What is the Word of God good for? 2 Timothy 3:16-17. You can't be longsuffering without the Word of God.

If there is ever a time you do NOT need to be acting or speaking in the flesh, it’s when you are reproving and rebuking someone. The words that come out of your mouth need to be the ones the Spirit puts there. Otherwise, you can do terrible harm, and the goal is to return the wayward Christian to a right relationship with God. Longsuffering should lead to restoration.

Truth is, you shouldn’t be butting your nose into everyone’s business either. You should address the things the Spirit leads you to address. If you’re a busybody, you are part of the problem because you are also a gossiper and have no useful function within the body of believers. Cut it out!

TOMATO 5 - Gentleness.

When you think of gentleness, what physical picture comes to mind? Maybe the way a mom holds a newborn? Maybe the way you hold something delicate? And while those are great pictures of the word gentleness, in Scripture it means moral goodness with integrity or moral excellence.

Romans 2:4  Or despises thou the riches of his goodness and forebearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? Being in the presence of God’s moral excellence, His gentleness is what causes us to repent. In Isaiah 6:1-5, Isaiah is in the presence of God Almighty  with 6 seraphim singing Holy, holy, holy. Their singing was so loud it shook the doorframe. The beauty Isaiah saw and the worship he experienced and the gentleness of God led him to repent.

God’s example of gentleness is to be what you display as well. This fruit draws people to God, convicts, restores and can lead them to salvation, and isn’t that the ultimate goal of the Spirit working in us is that others may see Christ in you? Don’t you want those around us to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ? Then it’s time to let the Spirit do His work and produce fruit in your life.

Having Peace in Unpeaceful Situations

What is the most uncomfortable, miserable place you have ever had the unfortunate experience to visit?

Mine was a small elevator in Rome, Italy, the size of a coffin. Kid you not. The first time my girlfriend Cheri and I rode the elevator, this nice young man was there to show us how to operate it when we entered, and he was there to show us how to operate it when we exited. Keep in mind, I am severely claustrophobic. So I was quite proud of the fact I had talked my way through the ride up without passing out. He was very thorough, and we felt we had a pretty good grip on the whole elevator contraption.

That evening, Cheri and I came in from our wandering. Our feet were burning. Our legs were like noodles. Wearily we entered the elevator. I entered and turned around. Cheri entered and turned around, so I faced her back. There was no room for her to stand to my side. She closed the outside door, the inside door which was directly in front of her and pushed the button for our floor. We reached our floor, and Cheri opens the inner door and attempts to open the outer door, but it doesn’t budge.

This story is much funnier told in person because there’s hand motions and gasping for air, but let’s just say, when I realized we were stuck I began hyperventilating. Cheri called the young man, and it would take him 20 minutes to get there. There was a large Italian man on the other side of the door yelling at us rather emphatically in Italian something we couldn’t understand. She starts to push the button for the first floor, and I yell, “We’ll plummet to our death!” I really am not a dramatic person, but the claustrophia had overtaken all logic and reasoning.

She pushed the button anyway. We did not plummet to our death. This time both doors opened, and I shoved her out of the way and sucked in the fresh air with deep heaves.

At no point in time during that ten minute ordeal did I ever feel at peace. Not one minute.

So when I read in Acts 12: 6, Peter was sleeping chained between two guards the night before he was to be executed, I marveled at the peace this man had. Not only was he asleep, but he was sleeping so soundly the angel had to strike him. That is some good sleep. That is sleep like you’ve just gotten a massage, and there’s no children, dogs, snoring husband or noisy neighbors to wake you kind of sleep. The kind of sleep where you leave drool on the pillow. You can’t get that kind of sleep if you are worrying about what tomorrow holds. You don’t get that kind of sleep if you’re worried about your impending death.

As a matter of fact, Peter thought he was having a vision even though he knew the angel was for real. After all, the angel had just hit him. The angel had to give Peter step by step instructions of what to do. Get up. Get dressed. Put on your sandals. Wrap your cloak around you. Follow me.

Keep in mind the guards never wake and were never alerted, not the ones chained to him and not the ones standing outside, not the ones at the first gate and not the ones at the second gate. It’s almost as if Peter was invisible. When they reached the iron gate that led to the city, it opened by itself, and the angel disappeared after they pass the first street.

How is it Peter had such peace? He knew what Herod had in store for him. It was no secret Herod intended to put Peter to death, and yet Peter had peace.

He slept in a dark, foul-smelling, rodent-infested, prison cell chained to two men, and he had peace.

Just a few Scriptures on peace:

Isaiah 32:17, The result of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever.

John 14:27, Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful.

John 16:33, I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.

Galatians 5:22, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness faith.

You know what these tell me? Peace is something the Spirit develops and matures in us. Peace requires a high level trust in the One who holds the future. Peace is having faith Jesus will work it out one way or another to the glory of God and to the benefit of the kingdom.

How are you sleeping at night? Are you at peace, or are you worried and anxious? I challenge you to allow the Spirit to mature and grow peace into your life.

Love, Joy and Peace - get you some

Love – Joy – Peace

As I studied these spiritual fruit, I realized these are not only characteristics of a maturing Christian but gifts to enrich our lives.  Fruit of the Spirit are actions prompted, directed and produced by the Holy Spirit. They bring glory to God.  Matthew 5:16 says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" (NIV).

God is Love

Did you know love is in the Bible over 700 times? Something God included that many times has to be important.

The first fruit listed in the Galatians 5 passage is love.  It is not an accident it is listed first because without love none of the other fruit can grow.  Love is an action, not a feeling. Our world gets this confused. 1 John 3:18 states, “Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth" (NIV).

Love produces love

Did you know Biblical love doesn’t take two? It only takes one with character.  What is character? It is doing something even when we don’t feel like it.  God loved us before we loved Him (Romans 5:8).

Rejoice in the Lord Always

Did you know joy is mentioned in the Bible over 400 times?  Again, if God put it in there that many times, we need to take notice.

Joy is love’s strength.  Nehemiah 8:12 tells us “the joy of the Lord is my strength.”  Our strength comes from Jesus.

Are you a glass-half-full person or a glass-half-empty person? How you see the world around you affects others.

Joy is holy optimism.  Joy is NOT happiness or pleasure.  We can have joy “in spite” of our circumstances like James 1:2-4 tells us.  Joy comes from knowing God is in control.

We must pursue Joy to honor the one who has given us life.

Peace that passes all understanding

Did you know peace is mentioned over 500 times in scriptures?  Bet you know what that means.

Peace is love’s security.  Peace is the tranquil state of an assured, redeemed, believing, obeying Christian.

We have peace in God because Jesus binds us to Him.  Real peace is knowing nothing can separate us from God. He promises to "keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in [Him]" (Isaiah 26:3 NIV).

Peace with others can be difficult.  I often tell my kids it takes two to argue as a way to remind them that they have control over themselves.

What do you do if you find your love, joy or peace tanks running low?

1, Get into the presence of God.

2, Talk to the One who can refill your tanks.

2. Get into God’s Word and recharge.
